It is really hard to compete with the top lyrics websites today because they have a huge databases of lyrics and they have been around for a long time. Even if you have better search engine optimization you are still posting duplicate content and will not get too much traffic. But lyrics websites get a ton of traffic because we all search for lyrics and there is a way to compete in this space. I suggest you start with only original content, basically, go through a list of new albums that come out each week and post lyrics to these new albums.

How do you find new albums that come out each week? Go to amazon, the new releases page shows all the new music releases weeks in advance and is always updated.

How do I know that this idea will work? On one of my music blogs I have listed the lyrics to an album that just came out and the artist was not really popular. This artist quickly became a huge hit and my lyrics pages for two songs received incredible amount of traffic and to this day, those lyric pages receive the most traffic out of the whole blog.

How should I set this website up? You could just use categories and posts on Blogger for a free and simple solution. Or, you can get a domain (with lyrics in the name), get a host, set up WordPress, use nice urls and a theme with good SEO and use categories and subcategories for artists and their albums.

Is this idea really that easy? No, nothing is easy and everything takes time but this idea will work. Here is a couple of things you should know. The big lyrics websites ask users to submit new lyrics and that is something that you cannot do in the beginning because you have no traffic. You have to get the lyrics yourself and that is the most painful part of that idea. Sometimes you can find lyrics online if you search hard enough but you might have to go to a bookstore, library, or some other place to actually copy and paste the lyrics. Obviously, you would not be buying the albums unless you start making enough money with your website.

How am I going to make money with this website? AdSense is the simple answer, that’s where you should start because it is really easy and fast to get an account and show ads on your pages. Afterwords, you can look into other ads or affiliate programs with Amazon and eBay or something like that but to start, get an AdSense account, and place ads on your website. You can get creative and sell the albums on your lyrics website for 20 bucks via PayPal because you can buy them for $15 on eBay. There are many things you can do but I would start with AdSense.

Anything else? Sure, here is a nice tip. It will take you some time to get the lyrics of new albums and usually there are no lyrics to albums that have not yet been released. But as soon as you know the track list you should make pages for the artist, album, and each track with “coming soon” content. This way, Google and other search engines will index your pages first and when you get the lyrics, you should slowly appear at the top of search engine search results.
